Why Does AliExpress Take So Long to Ship? 8 Causes & Fixes

Why does AliExpress take so long to ship? Parcel, clock and delivery truck illustration

A tracking number arrives. Your parcel does not. Then the same update sits on the screen for days.

AliExpress orders can take a long time because the wait includes more than international transport. The seller must prepare the item, hand it to a logistics provider and get it through export, customs and local delivery. A delay at any handoff can push back arrival.

The useful question is where your order is waiting—and who can do something about it. Here is how to read the timeline and prevent repeat problems.

How long does AliExpress take to deliver?

Shipping-time benchmarks by service

These carrier estimates were current in October 2026. Confirm that the seller offers the named service on your route; local and express examples are not services automatically included with every AliExpress order.

Service Published estimate Where it applies
US-stocked item: domestic carrier example 2–5 days USPS Ground Advantage, after dispatch within the US. Some destinations and hazardous goods take longer. Seller handling is additional.
Cainiao Premium 5–10 calendar days Cainiao’s English service guide names markets including Spain, the Netherlands, the UK and Belgium.
Cainiao Standard 10–18 calendar days The same guide’s key-country estimate; not a US-wide AliExpress Standard Shipping commitment.
Cainiao Economy 20–45 calendar days in the English guide Key countries and small, lightweight goods. Check the booked economy product, including any Super Economy option, separately.
Commercial express example 1–3 days UPS Worldwide Express or Saver, where available. Confirm the origin/postcode schedule and seller handover date.

Total wait = seller processing + the complete delivery journey. For illustration, if your seller confirms 3 calendar days to handover and your destination qualifies for the 10–18-day Standard estimate, plan on 13–21 days before unexpected delays. That is roughly two to three weeks—not ten days from payment. The three-day handling allowance is an example, not a measured AliExpress average.

Separate processing from transit

  • Processing: the period before the parcel is physically handed to the shipping provider. Stock checks, picking, packing and collection can all affect it.
  • Transit: the journey after handover, including sorting, international transport and destination delivery.
  • Total customer wait: the time from payment to delivery. This is the timeline that matters to the person buying from your store.

Do not add processing twice if checkout already shows an overall arrival date. A label-created event alone does not prove collection.

For US orders, use the checkout’s actual arrival range; the Cainiao table does not establish a typical US transit time. If your deadline is earlier than that range, choose confirmed local stock or a faster quoted service. Check calendar versus working days, and keep the refund deadline separate from the expected arrival date.

8 reasons AliExpress shipping takes so long

1. A listing is not the same as reserved inventory

AliExpress connects buyers with different sellers; it is not one shared stockroom. Its August 2026 US update introduced an in-stock guarantee for eligible paid orders canceled because stock runs out—a useful reminder that listing availability does not eliminate stockouts.

When a seller buys upstream after receiving your order, the item still needs domestic delivery, checking or repacking, and transfer to the export network. Ask whether your exact size and color are physically on hand, where they are stored and whether units are allocated to your order. A general “available” reply leaves those questions unanswered.

This matters when comparing sellers of the same item. A slightly cheaper listing that needs replenishment can lose more time before dispatch than a premium carrier saves afterward. Ask for the stock location and earliest physical handover, then compare the complete arrival window. Paying for faster transport while the product is unavailable solves the wrong bottleneck.

2. Preparation is mistaken for dispatch

“Label created” is not a pickup receipt. USPS distinguishes electronic shipping information from physical possession. Picking, packing and collection may still be outstanding even though a tracking number exists.

Ask for the handover date and carrier acceptance scan. If the order remains on “To ship,” check its dispatch countdown and cancellation options.

3. The shipping method favors price over speed

Cainiao’s Premium, Standard and Economy tiers have different delivery estimates. A low-cost option may offer fewer tracking milestones or a longer delivery window. Paying more can improve transit speed, but it cannot fix an item the seller has not prepared.

Compare the total checkout price and arrival range for the same product and address. For a deadline-sensitive purchase, a stocked local option may be more useful than upgrading a cross-border service after choosing the cheapest listing.

4. Collection, consolidation or export transport is waiting

The first journey may be from the seller to a sorting or export warehouse, not directly to an airport. Parcels can be grouped by destination before onward transport. Cainiao describes order consolidation and batch processing as parts of its AliExpress logistics network.

Ask the seller to identify the last physical scan and whether the parcel is awaiting collection or onward transport.

A parcel accepted by the logistics provider may still be waiting for an available departure or a connection. An export-facility scan does not necessarily mean it has left the country.

Consolidation adds a separate tradeoff for multi-item orders. Shipping together may reduce duplicate postage, but a missing item can hold up goods already received. Before using an agent to combine orders, agree whether incomplete orders should wait, ship separately or be canceled, and who pays any extra postage. Check the earliest customer deadline before choosing the cheapest combined parcel.

5. Customs needs information or an inspection

Cross-border shipments can be held when documentation is missing or the goods need further checks. DHL eCommerce’s customs guidance identifies additional paperwork, prohibited or dangerous goods, and duties and taxes among the possible reasons for a hold.

Product type also affects route choice. DHL’s July 2026 restricted-goods guide identifies lithium batteries, perfumes and aerosols as dangerous-goods examples. A route suitable for clothing may not accept the same parcel with a power bank or flammable cosmetic inside.

For liquids, powders, magnets, wireless electronics or branded products, give the carrier the exact product details before booking. Ask what documentation, packaging or authorization applies. “Restricted” does not mean every item in the category is banned; concealing the contents can create a much bigger problem than a delay.

Ask the carrier whether it needs anything from the recipient or sender. If it requests an invoice or product information, have the seller supply accurate documents. Verify any payment request through the carrier’s official website; do not follow an unexpected text-message link.

6. Tracking is between carriers

International parcels can pass from an export provider to a destination partner and then to the final delivery company. Their tracking systems may not update together.

“USPS Awaiting Item” does not mean USPS has lost your parcel. USPS’s tracking guidance distinguishes shipping-partner events from USPS possession. The parcel may already be with a partner while USPS is still waiting for it.

Check the carrier named in the latest event and any new local tracking number.

Read “Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending” differently from “Label Created.” USPS says the former can mean a container or pallet has arrived but the individual packages have not yet been scanned. This is a batch-processing stage, not evidence that every parcel has already received individual acceptance.

7. The final delivery needs your attention

USPS’s tracking guide distinguishes an attempted delivery from a parcel awaiting pickup. An incorrect apartment number, inaccessible entrance or missed collection notice can interrupt the last stage after the international journey is complete.

The exact wording changes your next step. For USPS “Notice Left” because no authorized recipient was available, there is no automatic second attempt: arrange redelivery or collection. “Available for Pickup” requires collection; USPS says redelivery cannot be scheduled for that status. Check the notice and retention deadline instead of waiting for another overseas tracking update.

8. A holiday, sales peak or disruption affects the route

Factory closures, high order volumes and transport disruption can affect different parts of the journey. DHL eCommerce’s delivery FAQ, for example, identifies weather, customs and operational backlogs as causes of delays.

Before a promotion, ask suppliers about their dispatch schedule and replenishment plans. Check the carrier’s current service notices for affected destinations. Do not assume the date of a public holiday tells you exactly when every seller or warehouse will resume normal work.

What to do when your order is delayed

Open the order details and compare the latest event with the original delivery range. Then contact the party responsible for the stage below.

Latest status What it tells you Your next step
To ship / processing Dispatch is not yet confirmed. Ask the seller for stock confirmation and a handover date. Review cancellation options if needed.
Label created Shipment details exist; collection is not established by the label alone. Ask the seller for the carrier’s acceptance scan.
Shipping partner / USPS Awaiting Item USPS does not yet have the parcel. Contact the seller or shipping partner about the handoff.
Export or line-haul update The parcel is in the cross-border part of the route. Check the last physical event and request an investigation if the order is overdue.
Customs exception Clearance may require information or further checks. Ask the carrier what is required and who must provide it.
Pickup or attempted delivery The local carrier needs action. Arrange collection or redelivery through the carrier.
Delivered, but not received The carrier has recorded delivery. Check the delivery location and household first, then contact the carrier and use the platform’s claim process.

Keep the order details, tracking and seller messages together. Give customers the last confirmed event and your next follow-up date, not an invented arrival date.

Escalate with evidence rather than another tracking screenshot

Send the order number, original arrival range, last physical scan and its date, plus the exact question you need answered. For a parcel awaiting handover, request proof of acceptance. For a customs exception, request the missing document. For an overdue parcel already with the carrier, request an investigation reference and follow-up date.

When USPS is handling the parcel, its current Missing Mail procedure permits a search request starting seven days from mailing. That clock is not seven days from AliExpress payment, and it is separate from a refund claim. Have the sender provide the mailing details and package description. A USPS label alone does not establish that USPS has the goods.

For a USPS parcel marked “Out for Delivery” but still missing after one full postal business day, its tracking guide directs customers to submit a local service request. Use the carrier-specific instructions; do not treat every quiet tracking period as a lost international parcel.

When can you request help or a refund?

You can contact the seller about a problem before a refund becomes available. Missing an estimated arrival date, however, does not automatically mean every order qualifies for the same remedy.

In its August 2026 US service update, AliExpress announced these refund-request windows for eligible US orders covered by its Fast Delivery guarantee and lacking delivery confirmation:

  • US-stocked products: 20 days after shipment.
  • Cross-border products: 30 days after shipment.

These are refund eligibility windows, not normal transit times or a promise for every order worldwide. Check whether your order includes Fast Delivery, then read its protection terms, claim options and submission deadline. A delivered-but-missing parcel is a different situation from one with no delivery confirmation.

Save evidence before submitting a claim, describe the actual problem and follow the platform’s instructions. Do not let an informal request to “wait a little longer” cause you to miss a displayed claim deadline. Nor should you confirm receipt before the goods arrive.

How sellers can prevent repeat shipping delays

One slow parcel needs troubleshooting. Review your fulfillment setup when these problems repeat:

  • Paid orders wait for replenishment despite showing available stock.
  • Labels appear promptly, but physical acceptance misses the agreed date.
  • The same product and destination receive inconsistent shipping services.
  • Multi-item orders arrive separately and generate avoidable support work.
  • Packaging or product quality changes between batches.
  • Refunds, reships and tracking inquiries absorb the saving on postage.

Level 1: Improve the existing marketplace workflow

Confirm stock by variation, agree on a dispatch target and test the route to your main destinations. Record payment, carrier acceptance and delivery dates—not just the fastest arrival. Set your store’s promise from actual results and monitor late orders.

Our guide to getting faster shipping on AliExpress covers purchase-level improvements. This approach suits early tests where inventory commitment would be premature.

Level 2: Add a dropshipping agent before buying deep inventory

A dropshipping agent can coordinate supplier purchasing, availability checks, incoming inspection, packing and shipping. Ask whether it can combine compatible items and give you one contact for exceptions.

Per-order purchasing can be an intermediate step while testing products or selling at modest volume; it is not the same as buying a bulk batch. NicheDropshipping describes both pay-after-sale purchasing and pre-stocked arrangements. With the former, goods must still reach the warehouse before dispatch. Confirm service eligibility, product minimums, fees and any branding minimum separately.

Trial the proposed setup with the same SKU and destination before moving your catalog. Compare order-to-acceptance time, delivery consistency, defects and total cost. An agent improves coordination; it cannot remove every supplier shortage or customs inspection.

Make the trial agreement specific: who confirms supplier stock, what incoming checks cover, when orders miss the daily dispatch cutoff, and what happens when an item fails inspection. Ask whether replacement purchasing restarts the lead time and whether partial shipments cost extra. These answers explain how the agent handles a difficult order, not just a straightforward one.

Level 3: Stock products with proven repeat demand

Pre-purchasing stock removes repeated procurement from each customer order. Stocking in the destination country also moves international replenishment outside the customer’s delivery window.

The tradeoff is cash tied up in inventory, plus storage and fulfillment costs. Start with a product that has repeat demand and a quantity you can reasonably sell. Do not fill a warehouse just to solve an untested product’s shipping problem.

NicheDropshipping’s China and US fulfillment centers support inventory handling, quality checks, bundling, labeling and shipping. If a different supplier model suits your catalog, compare the options in our AliExpress alternatives guide.

Measure the stage you want to improve

Keep separate results for each destination, service and stock location. Mixing domestic stock with cross-border orders can make a slow route look better than it is. Track the following from the order record and carrier events:

Measure How to calculate it What it helps you decide
Time to carrier acceptance Acceptance date minus payment date. Whether purchasing, stock or packing needs attention before upgrading postage.
Order-to-door time Delivery date minus payment date, using the same day basis. Whether the whole process supports your customer promise.
On-time delivery rate On-time deliveries among orders already due Ă· all orders already due Ă— 100. Whether a faster advertised service is also dependable. Include overdue undelivered orders.
Exception cost per order Support labor, refunds and replacement costs Ă· orders in the same group, without double-counting. Whether a higher service fee reduces the total cost of fulfillment.

Compare typical delivery with the slow end of the results, not the fastest parcel. With enough completed orders, the 90th-percentile time shows the point by which roughly nine in ten arrived. Report overdue undelivered orders alongside it: leaving those out can make performance look artificially strong. With a small trial, keep the individual dates visible instead of treating a handful of deliveries as a reliable benchmark.

Put a cost on chasing delayed orders

Illustrative monthly calculation: 600 orders × 8% requiring follow-up × 15 minutes per case = 12 support hours. At an assumed US$20 per hour, that is US$240, or US$0.40 per order, before refunds and replacement postage. These are example inputs; substitute your store’s figures.

If a proposed service adds US$0.30 per order, that is US$180 monthly at this volume. You would need to avoid nine of those support hours to cover it through labor savings alone. Compare the measured reduction with agent, storage, handling and inventory costs; do not assume every exception disappears. Our guide to AliExpress shipping costs explains the other charges.

Frequently asked questions

How long does AliExpress take to deliver to the US?

For US-stocked goods, USPS Ground Advantage estimates 2–5 days after dispatch when that service is used, with destination and product exceptions. Add seller handling. Cross-border orders need their own checkout estimate; neither that domestic range nor the 30-day refund threshold establishes a typical China-to-US delivery time.

Why is my AliExpress order still on “To ship” after a week?

The seller may still be preparing the order or waiting for stock. Check the dispatch deadline, ask whether the exact variation is available and request a firm handover date. If the wait no longer suits you, review the cancellation options shown on that order.

Why does USPS say “Awaiting Item” after AliExpress says shipped?

The platforms describe different stages. An overseas or shipping partner can be handling the parcel before USPS receives it. Look for USPS possession or acceptance rather than assuming that “shipped” means it has reached the final carrier.

Can I speed up an AliExpress order after paying?

Ask the seller before dispatch whether a different service or stocked location is available and what it would cost. Once the parcel is in transit, changing service may not be possible. Check your options before canceling and reordering.

Does a missed estimated delivery date mean I can get a refund?

Not automatically. The applicable guarantee, destination, tracking status and order deadline determine the next step. Open the order’s help or refund section and use the terms shown there rather than a generic rule from another purchase.
